The World’s Technological Capacity to Store, Communicate, and Compute Information

The World’s Technological Capacity to Store, Communicate, and Compute Information: We estimated the world’s technological capacity to store, communicate, and compute information, tracking 60 analog and digital technologies during the period from 1986 to 2007. In 2007, humankind was able to store 2.9 × 1020 optimally compressed bytes, communicate almost 2 × 1021 bytes, and carry out 6.4 × 1018instructions per second on general-purpose computers. General-purpose computing capacity grew at an annual rate of 58%. The world’s capacity for bidirectional telecommunication grew at 28% per year, closely followed by the increase in globally stored information (23%). Humankind’s capacity for unidirectional information diffusion through broadcasting channels has experienced comparatively modest annual growth (6%). Telecommunication has been dominated by digital technologies since 1990 (99.9% in digital format in 2007), and the majority of our technological memory has been in digital format since the early 2000s (94% digital in 2007).

I am not advocating that we switch inventory software, but there may be some features that we would like to request for future upgrades.

Our Android commercials are not nearly as great as those in Korea.

Interface takes charge over Si

This News and Views was written about our Nature Communications paper on LAO/STO/Si.  But the real subject matter is electronic reconstruction.

join.me

I finally "remembered" the name of the software that  Rachel Buck had suggested during our group meeting.  It's called "join.me".  I don't think it's a substitute for skype or teamviewer.  But it could work with skype and then you could share your screen as well as the video...

TeamViewer

We're having a lot of fun with TeamViewer:

http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx

it's nice because it's multiplatform and works with android and iphone as well as mac, pc and linux.  Control your experiment from your phone!

More later once we have a better handle on how to integrate it into the lab.

New Blog

I created a blogging site for sharing information.  You can view the blog by clicking on the orange "B" in the voodoo profile (on all computers), but you can also subscribe to it using a newsreader (e.g., Pulse).  Right now the blog is readable by anyone in the world (that seems to be the only setting that will work with the newsreaders).

You can e-mail to the blog using this address:

ansom.voodoo.techshare@blogger.com

But you need to use the ansom.voodoo account, or add yourself as an author.  You can become an author by going here:

http://www.blogger.com/blog-permissions.g?blogID=4721298007496992969

and for that you need to be logged in using our group account.

When I see interesting things I will probably post them to this blog rather than the ansom.voodoo@gmail.com account.
