Google Chrome Blog: Everybody’s talking (and translating) with Chrome: "Curious about how speech input can be used in real life? Here’s one example: Using Chrome, you can now translate what you say into other languages with Google Translate. If you’re translating from English, just click on the microphone on the bottom right of the input box, speak your text, and choose the language you want to translate to. In fact, you can even click on the “Listen” feature to hear the translated words spoken back to you!"

Ubisense - Precise real-time location

Precise real-time location

Our location tags transmit ultra-wideband (UWB) radio signals to a network of fixed sensors, which use the incoming signals to exactly locate the tag's positions.
  • Our sensors extract the maximum amount of positioning information from each signal to minimise infrastructure costs and ensure robustness in cluttered surroundings
  • UWB technology enables our system to operate in locations where reflections defeat other radio positioning systems
Better positioning accuracy and robustness means more reliable operation of your location-driven processes.

Only Ubisense has:

  • Combined Angle-of-Arrival, And Time-Difference-of-Arrival technology: Ubisense gathers more readings from each sensor, for better error elimination and higher accuracy
  • Full visibility of sensor operation: Ubisense tools display all sensor readings graphically in 2D or 3D, and simulate the effects of configuration changes, making it easy to spot errors and optimise performance

Location Data From Phones Is Valuable for Ads - NYTimes.com

Location Data From Phones Is Valuable for Ads - NYTimes.com: "The companies are using the cell tower and hot spot data to build maps of the world, maps that help smartphones quickly pinpoint their locations. Using the signals as navigational beacons is particularly useful in places where GPS satellite signals are weak, like urban areas or anywhere indoors."

It would be interesting to try to use this to map the inside of our laboratory. We could put small wifi transmitters around the lab and collect the intensity from each of them with our mobile device and use that to pinpoint a location.

Google, Already Dominant in Mobile Search, Isn’t Resting - NYTimes.com

Google has been slow to seize some newer Web business opportunities, most notably social networking. Investors have criticized the company for dragging its feet when it comes to figuring out how to make money in new fields.

But mobile is an exception. Last year, Eric E. Schmidt, then the company’s chief executive, said Google’s philosophy was “mobile first,” meaning it would build products for phones at the same time as versions for PCs.“This is the place that Google is essentially betting its future on,” said Karim Temsamani, Google’s head of mobile advertising, a role created in September.

The Tragic Death of the Flip - NYTimes.com

The Tragic Death of the Flip - NYTimes.com: "So why did Cisco kill off the flip?

I’ve spoken to a bunch of people in the industry, trying, in my human way, to figure out the logic here. It seems clear that Cisco, whose primary focus is making networking equipment for businesses, was all excited about getting into the consumer electronics game; that’s why it spent $590 million on Flip. But then, as John Chambers, Cisco’s chief executive, put it, the company decided to make “key, targeted moves as we align operations in support of our network-centric platform strategy.”

Which, in English, means, “We had no clue what we were doing.”"

Guide to Being Bumped (or Not) - NYTimes.com

Guide to Being Bumped (or Not) - NYTimes.com: "ONE hundred twenty-two seats. One hundred twenty-eight passengers waiting to board. Someone’s going to be bumped." Airlines are required to ask people who are not in a hurry to give up their seats voluntarily, in exchange for compensation, before passengers who do not want to give up their seats are kicked off. But with capacity cuts, getting customers to volunteer is tricky. Full planes mean that the next flight out with an open seat might not be until the next day or even the next.Still, there are some travelers who see the flight crunch as a lucrative opportunity. Among them is Ben Schlappig. The 20-year-old senior at the University of Florida said he earned “well over $10,000” in flight vouchers in the last three years by strategically booking flights that were likely to be oversold in the hopes of being bumped.“I don’t remember the last time I paid over $100 for a ticket,” he boasted. His latest coup: picking up $800 in United flight vouchers after giving up his seat on two overbooked flights in a row on a trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Or as he calls it, “a double bump.”Obviously not your typical traveler, Mr. Schlappig is among a small, but passionate group obsessed with accruing frequent-flier miles. An elite flier on United, American and other carriers, he regularly makes “mileage runs,” crisscrossing the continent in a day with multiple airport stops simply to rack up miles, a pursuit he chronicles (writing under the name Lucky) on the One Mile at a Time blog on BoardingArea.com, which is geared to road warriors. Along the way, he deliberately seeks out flights he thinks will be oversold.“Every time I book a ticket, in the back of my mind is which flight has the best chance of being bumped,” he said. His strategies — which include booking the last flight of the day, telling the check-in clerk or gate agent that he is willing to give up his seat even before an announcement has been made and praying for bad weather — have already earned him more than $2,800 in flight vouchers so far this year. But his experiences also provide some education for travelers looking for ways to avoid being bumped.Below, insider tips to the bumping game. In most cases, do the opposite if you want to keep your seat.

Youtube still not ideal for long training videos

YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

I had to split the clips into 2 GB chunks (19 of them!) using a neat program that splits without transcoding (so its faster). Then I had to upload all of the files onto youtube. I could select all of them at once, but then the browser would crash after 3 uploaded.

Then, I had to select them as private. And then I had to make a playlist. But the playlist doesn't work because these are private videos! So you have to keep this link active while you click on one video to the next. The video editor can't handle video clips that are very long.

The good part of the google video is that you can make links to short clips, or points in a video and use them for training or summaries. I think the video editor will work if you make the clip sections sufficiently short.

Maybe we'll find a good solution to multimedia serving.

Nanoscale Tunable Reduction of Graphene Oxide for Graphene Electronics

Nanoscale Tunable Reduction of Graphene Oxide for Graphene Electronics: "The reduced form of graphene oxide (GO) is an attractive alternative to graphene for producing large-scale flexible conductors and for creating devices that require an electronic gap. We report on a means to tune the topographical and electrical properties of reduced GO (rGO) with nanoscopic resolution by local thermal reduction of GO with a heated atomic force microscope tip. The rGO regions are up to four orders of magnitude more conductive than pristine GO. No sign of tip wear or sample tearing was observed. Variably conductive nanoribbons with dimensions down to 12 nanometers could be produced in oxidized epitaxial graphene films in a single step that is clean, rapid, and reliable."

The World’s Technological Capacity to Store, Communicate, and Compute Information

The World’s Technological Capacity to Store, Communicate, and Compute Information: We estimated the world’s technological capacity to store, communicate, and compute information, tracking 60 analog and digital technologies during the period from 1986 to 2007. In 2007, humankind was able to store 2.9 × 1020 optimally compressed bytes, communicate almost 2 × 1021 bytes, and carry out 6.4 × 1018instructions per second on general-purpose computers. General-purpose computing capacity grew at an annual rate of 58%. The world’s capacity for bidirectional telecommunication grew at 28% per year, closely followed by the increase in globally stored information (23%). Humankind’s capacity for unidirectional information diffusion through broadcasting channels has experienced comparatively modest annual growth (6%). Telecommunication has been dominated by digital technologies since 1990 (99.9% in digital format in 2007), and the majority of our technological memory has been in digital format since the early 2000s (94% digital in 2007).

New Blog

I created a blogging site for sharing information.  You can view the blog by clicking on the orange "B" in the voodoo profile (on all computers), but you can also subscribe to it using a newsreader (e.g., Pulse).  Right now the blog is readable by anyone in the world (that seems to be the only setting that will work with the newsreaders).

You can e-mail to the blog using this address:

ansom.voodoo.techshare@blogger.com

But you need to use the ansom.voodoo account, or add yourself as an author.  You can become an author by going here:

and for that you need to be logged in using our group account.

When I see interesting things I will probably post them to this blog rather than the ansom.voodoo@gmail.com account.
